Michael J. Pokabla, D.O., M.S. joined Glaucoma Consultants Of The Capital Region in 2012 and is a Board Certified ophthalmologist. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Pokabla received his bachelor degree from The University of Mount Union and his medical degree from The University of New England College of Osteopathic medicine in Biddeford, Maine. Dr. Pokabla completed both his internship and ophthalmology residency at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Dr. Pokabla went on to pursue additional fellowship training in glaucoma surgery at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Eye and Ear Infirmary. During his fellowship, Dr. Pokabla participated in clinical research and training of ophthalmology residents. Michael’s research interests included chemical evaluation of glaucoma medications and development of novel telemedicine protocols for the emergency room. After completion of his glaucoma fellowship in Pittsburgh, Dr. Pokabla moved to Urbana, Illinois and was a staff ophthalmologist at Carle Foundation Hospital from 2010 to 2012.
Dr. Pokabla specializes in glaucoma surgery and small incision cataract surgery. He is actively involved in numerous clinical research studies as an investigator and principal investigator. Dr. Pokabla serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Albany Medical College and spends time teaching ophthalmology residents at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY and Albany Medical Center.
Dr. Pokabla is married to Martina and has two daughters. Besides spending time with his family, Michael enjoys working in his yard and exercise.
